GAS
What is a Gas System Compliance Certificate ?
This Certificate is given to the appliance owner for new installations or alterations/extensions to existing gas services. This is also the case for installation work on caravans, boats and fixed gas BBQs. It is very important the owner obtains and keeps this certificate.
What is a Gas System Compliance Plate ?
From July 1, 2011, Gas fitters must attach compliance plates for all installation work for Type A and B related gas work. This is in addition to the current requirement for issue of gas system compliance certificates. The compliance plate will allow gas suppliers, gas system owners, gas fitters and gas inspectors to easily identify the history of the gas installation and who has undertaken what work.
How do I connect to natural gas ?
Connecting to the natural gas network is easy. Just follow these simple steps.
By APA Group.
STEP 1. Call 1800 007 427 for a property assessment.
We’ll check that your property is on the natural gas network and will ask for a couple of easy questions.
What appliances will run on natural gas ?
Where do you want us to put the natural gas meter?
We’ll send someone to confirm there’s enough gas pressure to run your appliances and that we can install the meter where you want it.
We’ll also determin whether we can connect you for free or whether there will be a cost to connect.
The assessment only takes a few days, it doesn’t cost a thing and you don’t even have to be there.
STEP 2. We’ll call you with the assessment results.
Just confirm over the phone that you want to proceed.
If there’s a cost to connect and you want to go ahead, we provide the costs to your chosen natural gas retailer, who will send you a formal quote.
STEP 3. Call your chose energy retailer.
Tell your retailer that you’ve organised connection to the natural gas network and ask them for a “meter install”. They’ll send us authorisation from your gas retailer.
STEP 4. Our Contractor will call you to schedule connection.
They’ll lay the connection pipe on the agreed day and the meter will be installed a few days later.
Your own gasfitter can then connect your appliances to the natural gas meter.
INSTALLING YOUR APPLIANCES.
All gas appliances must be installed by a qualified gasfitter.
Your gasfitter will know all the appropriate Australian Standards and Regulations for appliance installation, ensuring quality workmanship and excellent safety standards. They will complete a compliance certificate, which guarantees their work for 12 months, and will leave a copy with you.

HOT WATER SYSTEMS
What is a Heat Pump ?
Heat pumps are a relatively new technology that are becoming very popular. They work by removing heat from the ambient air to warm water. Heat pumps are the most efficient hot water systems and they are a more environmentally friendly alternative to straight fas and electric storage systems. Heat pumps are usually located at ground level and are approximately the same size as conventional hotwater tanks. Like solar, some heat pumps use an electric booster to supply adequate hot water during periods of very cold weather.
We recommend Aquamax, Rheem, Stiebel Eltron, Quantum and Dux Heat Pumps.

What is a Solar Gas Boosted System ?
Solar systems use the sun’s energy to heat water, so they are much better for the environment. They are the cheapest hot water systems to run but generally have a higher initial purchase price. Their average payback period is 6 years. This means they can save you money over the life of the unit. Solar gas boosted systems come with gas or LPG boosters to supply adequate hot water during periods of low sunshine or very cold weather. Solar systems use collectors located on the roof and connected to a storage tank on the roof or at ground level. Ground level tanks are sometimes preferred because they provide a clean roofline.
We recommend Aquamax, Everhot, Dux, Rinnai, Thermasol and Rheem Solar Gas Boosted systems.

What is a Solar Electric Boosted system ?
Solar systems use the sun’s energy to heat water, so they are much better for the environment. They are the cheapest hot water systems to run but generally have a higher initial purchase price. Their average payback period is 6 years. This means they can save you money over the life of the unit. The electric boosters supply adequate hot water during periods of low sunshine or very cold weather. Solar systems use collectors located on the roof and connected to a storage tank on the roof or at ground level. Ground level tanks are sometimes preferred because they provide a clean roofline.

What is a Continuous Flow hot water system ?
Gas continuous flow hot water units heat water as required, so they never run out. They are sometimes referred to as instantaneous units. Gas continuous is a sensible method of water heating, because you only pay to heat the water you use. Possibly the biggest advantage of these units is that they are much smaller than storage systems, saving valuable space. The more hot water you use, the higher capacity unit you will require.
We recommend Aquamax, Everhot, Rheem, Bosch, Dux, Thermasol & Rinnai continuous flow / instantaneous hot water systems.

What is a 5 Star Gas Storage hot water system ?
Holding the highest energy efficient star rating for Gas Storage, these units not only help save the environment, they’ll also save you money. Gas storage systems store heated water at a constant temperature in an insulated tank, ready for use. The water is reheated by a Gas flame when the temperature falls below the thermostat setting. Their storage capacity and recovery rate determines how much hot water they can deliver per hour. Because hot water systems heat much faster than electric systems, they usually require a smaller tank to produce the same amount of hot water per hour.
We recommend Aquamax, Dux and Rheem 5 Star Gas Storage systems.

What is a 3 & 4 Star Gas Storage system ?
With low upfront costs, these Gas Storage systems are ideal replacement units. They store heated water at a constant temperature in an insulated tank, ready for use. the water is reheated by a Gas flame when the temperature falls below the thermostat setting. These systems are rated for their energy efficiency with an energy star rating system. The higher the star rating, the better the efficiency. Their storage capacity and recovery rate determines how much hot water they can deliver per hour. Because hot water systems heat much faster than electric systems, they usually require a smaller tank to produce the same amount of hot water per hour.
We recommend Rheem, Vulcan and Dux 3 & 4 star gas hot water systems.
DUX Gas Storage (3 Star) Specification Sheet
What is an Electric Storage hot water system ?
In electric storage hot water units, water is heated in an insulated tank by an electric element, like a giant kettle. Units that are less than 160 litres generally recover continuously. These are suited to households where smaller amounts of hot water are used throughout the day rather than a large amount being required at one time. Systems greater than 160 litres capacity generally use off-peak electricity. With an off-peak system, water is heated overnight to provide adequate water for the following day, reducing your total electricity charges over that of a peak system. While electric storage heaters are generally cheaper to purchase and install, they usually have the highest ongoing energy cost and are the least environmentally friendly option.
We recommend Aquamax, Thermalec, Everhot, Rheem and Dux electric hot water systems.

WATER EFFICIENCY
What is WELS and what does it mean?
WELS is a government regulatory scheme, underpinned by product testing to Australian Standards. WELS products must carry a WELS label showing the water efficiency star rating and the water consumption or flow rate of the product. The WELS water rating label provides water efficiency information for water-using household products, similar in appearance to the energy rating label (which clothes washers and dishwashers must also carry). The label carries two important pieces of information to help the consumer to compare products – stars and water consumption or water flow figures.
For better water efficiency – the more stars the better and the lower the number the better!
The label shows: a one to six star rating for a quick assessment of the model’s water efficiency – the more stars on the label the more water efficient the product and a number showing the water consumption per use (whitegoods, sanitary ware) or the water flow per minute (plumbing products) based on laboratory tests.
SPECIALISED COURSES / ENDORSEMENTS
ASBESTOS
What is Asbestos Bonded Removal Certificate ?
A licensed tradesman who has successfully completed the Bonded Asbestos Removal course has a certificate issued by Workplace Health & Safety Queensland. Any tradesman or other worker who is required to remove significant amounts of bonded asbestos materials needs to know how to do it safely. This licence certifies that knowledge. BACKFLOW
What a Backflow Prevention endorsement?
A licensed tradesman who has completed the Backflow Prevention course has an endorsement on their Plumbing license. This course has been designed to train plumbers in the commissioning, testing and repairing of backflow prevention devices.
What is Backflow Prevention?
Each backflow prevention device must be tested on an annual basis. This is a condition of connection to the water supply. It means that the device is maintained and continues to operate effectively. The annual test will ensure the drinking water supply is protected from backflow.
If a device is defective or faulty, it may:
- not prevent a contaminated source entering the drinking the water supply
- cause water to be wasted through leaking devices
- impact on the water pressure supplying your property

TMV
What is TMV – Thermostatic Mixing Valves ?
Tempering Valves and Thermostatic Mixing Valves work by mixing hot and cold water together to reduce the temperature of the hot water. To ensure that the water temperature is correct & the valve is functioning correctly, the Australian Standard (AS3500) that requires that these valves be installed also requires that they are tested at least annually in a commercial & domestic installation by a suitably trained person.
What is a TMV endorsement?
A licensed tradesman who has completed the TMV course has an endorsement on their Plumbing license. The course provides participants with the information they need to install & service Thermostatic Mixing Valves in a range of settings.
