Are thinking of Solar Panels – Is your Roof Suitable

Are you are thinking about getting SOLAR PANELS if you are, is your roof suitable!!

Please find below some helpful information about Solar Panels.

Is My Roof Suitable for Solar?
More and more people are installing solar in some form or another in order to reduce their
dependence on mains electricity and to lower their electricity bills significantly. If you’re thinking of
joining this growing number, you’ll first need to know if your roof is suitable for solar. Here we
outline what you need to know. If you have any other questions about whether your roof is suitable
for solar, speak to your local solar professional. They’ll be only too happy to help.

What Direction Does the Roof Face?
For any type of solar system, it is best to have a north facing roof, as this gives you the best
exposure to the sun throughout the day. If your roof faces east or west, this is also alright but a
south facing roof is not ideal at all. If you have a south facing roof, your installer may recommend
placing the solar panels on brackets on the ground instead to improve their output.

Is Your Roof Shaded?
Something else that you’ll need to consider is if your roof is shaded at all. Shading can come from
large trees that overlook the roof or even from neighbouring buildings. If it is practical to do so, you
may want to remove any trees or items that shade the area where you wish to place your solar
panels. If it is something that can’t be removed, like your neighbour’s two storey home, your
installer will relocate the panels to optimise their output.

What Angle is Your Roof?
Solar systems are best installed on roofs that are between 10 degrees and 45 degrees. If you have
a flat roof, you can still install solar systems but it will cost more as you will need to install special
tilting brackets that hold your panels in the required position at the correct angle.

Is Your Roof Structurally Sound?
Solar panels are heavy, and the larger the system, the heavier it gets. Therefore, it is important to
make sure that your roof is capable of holding the panels. The installer will assess the strength of
your roof. In most cases, it is more than adequate for solar but in some cases, your roof will need to
be reinforced before solar can be installed and this adds on to the total cost of the system.

Is Your Roof Colorbond or Tiled?
If you have a metal roof such as a Colorbond roof, there is no additional charge to install a solar
power system. However, if you have a tiled roof, an extra charge will apply in order for the
professional to source and install the additional stainless steel brackets required to safely hold the
system.

What is SOLAR POWER ? Some information for you…

Do you really know what Solar Power is.  Please check out this information.

Solar Power FAQs.
Solar power is becoming more and more popular but it can be tricky to know what it is and what it is used for. To help answer a few of the most common
questions, we’ve put together this FAQ. For more information, speak to your local solar power supplier.

What is Solar Power?
Solar power is simply the generation of some form of power by harnessing the energy from the sun. It is clean, completely renewable, and free (once you have installed the system that will harness the sun’s energy in some way).

What Can Solar Power Be Used For?
Solar power can be used to generate electricity for use in your home, to heat water (solar hot water systems), to power your outdoor lighting, or to power small appliances and gadgets when you are camping or otherwise outdoors.

What is a Solar PV System?
A solar PV system is a way of generating power for use inside the home. If the system is sized correctly it can produce enough electricity to power the whole home, with any excess feeding back into the main electricity grid or stored in batteries. Even a small solar PV system can save you significant amounts on your electricity bills!

What is Solar Hot Water?
Solar hot water is where all domestic hot water is heated by the sun. The sun heats the water inside special collectors (panels) and the heated water is then stored in a tank ready for use. Solar hot water can help to slash your energy bills and there is no need to worry about running out of hot water on cloudy days as all solar hot water systems are fitted with gas or electric boosters that will heat the water when the power of the sun just isn’t enough.

How Do Solar Panels Work?
Solar panels work by converting the light energy that comes from the sun into usable electricity. In a solar PV system, the panels collect DC electricity and an inverter changes into the AC electricity that is used inside the home. In the case of solar hot water, special tubes run throughout the panel and the tubes carry water which is directly heated by the sun. The heated water is then stored for later use.

What is a Grid Connect or Off Grid System?
A grid connected solar PV system is where the system is connected to the main electricity grid. Any excess electricity you produce is fed into the grid, and if you should need more electricity than your PV system produces, the extra comes straight from the grid, so that you always have a power supply. An off grid system means that you are not connected to the main electricity grid at all and any excess power you generate is stored in batteries for use at a later time.

What is a Feed In Tariff?
Simply speaking, a feed in tariff is what the electricity company pays you for the energy that you generate. The feed in tariff can be gross or net – a gross feed in tariff pays you for all the energy that you produce while a net feed in tariff only pays you for the excess electricity that you feed back into the grid.

Will Shade Affect My Solar Power?
To get the most from your solar power system, it is recommended that the panels are exposed to as much sunlight as possible during the day. Any shading on the system will cause it to work at less than its peak capacity, thus producing less hot water or less electricity. It is preferred that solar panels are installed on the north facing side of the roof.

Are There Rebates Available for Installing Solar Powered Systems?
There are rebates available for both solar PV systems and solar hot water systems. The rebates may be available in form of solar credits such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). These credits help to make the cost and installation of a solar power system cheaper.

Who Can Install Solar Power Systems?
Solar PV systems and solar hot water systems should only be installed by registered, qualified professionals such as a solar energy installer, an electrician, or a plumber. If you want to take advantage of rebates, you’ll need to use someone that is government accredited.

Hot Water Safety

Do you know all you need to know about Hot Water Safety for your Home. How hot is too hot!

Before the latest temperature regulations, the hot water temperature in most homes was
generally set between 65 degrees and 75 degrees.
In some homes, the hot water temperature was even higher. The table below shows you how
long it takes for skin to receive a major scald burn from water at a range of different
temperatures. The best way of preventing scalds in the bathroom is to reduce the
temperature of the hot water at the basin, bath and shower to 50 degrees.

By law, all new hot water systems are now required to comply with Plumbing Regulations. (The only exceptions to this are premises intended for children and the elderly – such as early childhood centres, schools, nursing homes, and so on. These now have a temperature limit of 45 degrees. The previously mentioned settings are not bathing temperatures. Cold water still needs to be mixed with hot water. The maximum bathing temperature recommended for young children is 37-38 degrees.

If you have had a hot water system installed before 5 August 1998, there are various ways of reducing the temperature of the hot tap water in the bathroom, depending on the type of your hot water system.
For the best advice, talk to your Licensed Plumbing Practitioner, who may recommend:

* Installing a tempering value, which reduces the hot water temperature in the bathroom, but does not affect the temperature in the kitchen.
* Installing a thermostatic mixing value, which can be set to deliver hot water at a precise, safe temperature.

More than 90% of these scalds occur in the bathroom where the temperature of water from the hot tap is set too high and a child or elderly person cannot react quickly enough to avoid a serious scald injury.

Water ºC Major Burn in
49 degrees 5 minutes
52 degrees 1.5 – 2 minutes
54 degrees 30 seconds
57 degrees 10 seconds
60 degrees less than 5 seconds
63 degrees less than 3 seconds
66 degrees 1.5 seconds
68 degrees 1 second
